When Jinx suggested we watch this movie, I really had no idea what it was about except that it was a comedy and that the title suggested that it had something to do with sports. If you knew me, you’d know that I’m not the hugest sports fan, especially organized sports, but I’m always “game” to try something new.

The movie starts with a short explanation how sports has changed because players no longer really care about the game they are playing and instead just go where the money is, leaving sports without any heart. The fans quickly dwindle as they lose interest.

The movie then turns it’s attention to 2 guys: Joe Cooper (Trey Parker) and Doug Remer (Matt Sone) that society considers losers because they have no money, no jobs and they spend their time playing video games and throwing basketball hoops in their driveway.

Attempting to show off to a couple of girls and score a bit of cash at the same time, they spontaneously come up with the rules for a new type of game called BASEketball. Funny thing happens, it becomes wildly popular in their neighbourhood and within 9 months becomes a professional sport complete with teams nation-wide, stadiums with garages with basketball hoops and cheerleaders in bustiers and garter belts!

Ok, if this sounds a little crazy, it certainly is… and that’s why it’s fun, especially for someone like me, who never went for the jocks and always thought all the hoopla over sports and the overflow of testosterone was a bit ridiculous. Following the rules of the game, these 2 losers get to pysche out all the athletes who surpass them both in height and weight by doing nutty and stupid things like saying they slept with their mom or showing them someone’s butt.

This may not win any awards for great acting or script… it’s not particularly original in it’s humor but it’s good for a fun evening with a bottle of beer and a bag of chips… just laughing at the silliness and unlike how most sport fans, not taking the sport too seriously! 😉
