Well, I’m not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t this.

In execution, Ella Enchanted is sort of a live-action Shrek meets A Knight’s Tale, but the story is fairy traditional. In other words, the key ingredients are your standard ones – the wicked uncle regent, the good-hearted king-to-be prince, and the farmgirl who steals his heart – but it’s updated with a few modern twists. It’s also spiced up with some song and dance numbers.

It doesn’t stray very far from the realm of Barbie as Rapunzel though, the characters are very shallow and uninteresting, and everything is focused on the premise of Ella being Enchanted. Well, at least the title is accurate, even if the movie’s marketing made me believe this was more in league with Ever After (better movie).
What’s good about it if anything you say? Well it’s certainly not a waste of time if you enjoyed Shrek and A Knight’s Tale. It got a few laughs out of me, and not mocking ones. The effects are good if not awe-inspiring, the settings are pretty, and nobody does a bad job with their acting bits. Except perhaps Eric Idle, he basically phoned this one in.

[…] The movie has no big twists or surprises and it’s certainly not “the princess bride”. We all know ahead of time how this story will end but it still is an enjoyable ride. I think Anne Hathaway is one of the biggest reasons this movie works… she’s not only gorgeous but very smart and engaging and I just couldn’t help but like her and this movie.
